About Gary
I’m a choir director, vocal coach, and arranger with a passion for bringing people together through singing. Over the past two decades, I’ve led choirs of all sizes and abilities, from complete beginners to seasoned performers, helping them discover the thrill of making music as a group.
Before moving to Berwick-upon-Tweed, I directed large singing groups in Leeds and Newcastle, performing in venues as varied as Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, St Peter’s in Rome, and Vivaldi’s church in Venice. Earlier in my musical life, I sang with the York Minster Choir, an experience that shaped my love of choral music and taught me the power of a shared voice.
Alongside live performance, I’ve arranged choral music for organisations including Disney Entertainment, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group, the Orlando Philharmonic Choir and The Voices of Liberty.
I believe singing should be welcoming, inspiring, and rewarding. That’s why I founded Vivace Vocal Collective: to create a choir that feels like a community as well as a place to make a fantastic sound. Whether you’ve never sung before or you’ve been performing for years, you’re invited to come along, try it out, and see how it feels to lift your voice alongside others.
In every rehearsal and lesson, I aim to create a safe space where singers can explore their voices without judgement or unwarranted criticism.
When I’m not rehearsing or performing, you’ll usually find me arranging music, working with individual singers to build their skills and confidence, or walking with my two dogs, Bobbi and Charlie.
